Madeira, an integral part of Portugal and consequently of the European Union, is located in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 900 km southwest of Lisbon.
The archipelago, with a total population of less than 300,000 inhabitants, has its capital in the city of Funchal, a cosmopolitan city with a long tourist tradition.
Madeira is highly attractive for international investment as a result of the low levels of inflation, the low tax rates practiced, as well as, in comparison with other places in Europe, the competitive operating costs.
The economic development of Madeira has relied on the substantial contribution of the CINM (International Business Center) as the main instrument for attracting foreign investment.
Formally approved by the European Union as an adequate and effective program of economic development and having been recently referenced by the OECD as a model to follow, the IBC is fully integrated into the Portuguese and Community legal systems, contributing, through its transparency and rigorous regulation, to the attractiveness of Madeira for foreign investment.
In comparison with other alternative places in the EU for the installation of activities with an international vocation, Madeira is competitive in terms of costs and operating expenses.
The prices of various goods and services are competitive, allowing companies that are set up to face globally lower costs compared to those presented by other international business centers.
Examples of this are the costs associated with acquiring or leasing offices. As a result of the real estate development in recent years, there are several options in terms of location and affordable costs.
Other operating costs such as telecommunications, energy and the cost of living are generally low.
In fact, investors benefit from highly qualified public and private support services, including an efficient network of business support service providers, banks, insurance companies, a local university, international schools, excellent telecommunication routes, and a wide range of other related services and high quality.
Companies that settle in Madeira benefit from a young and qualified labor market.
The University of Madeira (with around 300 graduates per year) or professional schools could be another source of recruitment, as well as Madeiran students placed in universities in mainland Portugal.
Portugal is party to the Schengen Agreement, namely with regard to the regime for granting entry visas to the country. The work visa allows foreign citizens from countries not belonging to the European Economic Area (EEA), the European Union (EU) or Switzerland to enter Portuguese territory for the development of their professional activities for a maximum period of 3 years. (allowing multiple reentry into the country).
Visas must be applied for at the Embassy or a Consulate in the applicant's country of residence.
All citizens of A.E.E., EU and Switzerland can enter, stay and reside in Portugal, up to a maximum period of 3 months, without any formalities other than possession of a valid passport or identification document.
