Pico dos Barcelos was once a silk cultivation area

The origin of this place name is related to the name of one of Madeira's settlers, Diogo de Barcelos, also a silk merchant, who was given land in the area to exploit and where he began growing mulberry trees, an important plant for feeding the silkworm.

Over the years, captivated by the location, the view and the economic interest, the surrounding population grew, partly driven by the construction of a road in 1917, facilitating access to the site, which was frequented all the time by countless national and foreign visitors.

HISTORIC ZONE

Over the years, small catering units have been built in the area surrounding the viewpoint to support visitors and tourists.

Today it is a must-see for all those who visit the island of Madeira, offering panoramic views beyond the amphitheatre of the city of Funchal, the deserted islands, Ponta do Garajau, Cabo Girão, Câmara de Lobos, the mountains and the adjacent peaks to the north.
